| 2008 - Bright Hill Center Workshops for Children, Teens, and Adults - 2008 |
-
Bright Hill's workshops take place in the Bright Hill Education Wing. This wonderful building was originally a garage but, in 2005, thanks to a generous grant from the Otis A. Thompson Foundation, the garage was completely renovated for educational uses. Its heating system makes it cozy in the winter, and its insulated, heavy-duty doors provide both warmth in the winter and friendly cross-breezes in the winter. The garage was originally constructed in the 1980s, to compliment the 1865 house and is accessible in all weathers via a breezeway off the front porch.
-
The house, which serves as Bright Hill's main building, and which houses the Word & Image Gallery, BHP's offices, the Kitchen BookShop and Reception Area, and two guest rooms for visiting writers, has a handicap-accessible ramp. We are hoping to make the site completely user-friendly by adding a handicap-accessible bathroom in 2008.
-
The Library & Internet Center is connected to the main building via the Kitchen Bookshop, and it too has a handicap-accessible ramp from level to level, in the facility. The library is stocked with more than 6,000 literary journals dating to the 1940s, many of them complete sets, a gift from Renee Weiss of the Quarterly Review of Literature; and literary prose, poetry, and criticism, art, children's books, reference, and nature books. We do not stock popular titles. Most of the books are for use within the library; we hope to have them catalogued within the next few years, and almost all of them will be available in an online archive at that time. In addition, there is a loft with large, comfy pillows for children to read and play quiet games.
-
Please visit us, take our workshops, read at Word Thursdays, buy our BHP books -- become a part of Bright Hill Press, "Where Literature Lives!"
- March marked the beginning of Bright Hill's annual workshops program, available to all interested children, teens, and adults. This year's children's workshops include the following sessions:
-
Word Thursdays Winter & Summer Workshops for Kids 2008 - THE WORD THURSDAYS MUSEUM RESEARCH, WRITING, ART, EXHIBITION, & PUBLISHING PROGRAM FOR KIDS
-
Bright Hill Literary Center in Treadwell announces its 14th annual Summer and Fall Workshops programs for Kids and Adults. All workshops will take place in Bright Hill's Education Wing, located at 94 Church Street, Treadwell, NY, one block north of Barlow's General Store (Main Street).
-
The Summer Literary Workshops for Kids programs, during which participants will write, sculpt, compose, paint, and make books, include:
- 1. June 30-July 5, 9 am -2:30 pm (July 4th holiday observed), for kids 5-14, Catskills Waterways;
- 2. August 4-9, for kids 5-14, 9 am-2:30 pm, Catskills Trees & Mountains;
- In both workshops students will learn about this region, all the way back to the Devonian Sea, and ancient tree and rock formations. They will write water and tree songs and make books and paintings about the Catskills, using materials found in nature.
- 3. August 11-15, 9 am - 2:30 pm (for teens), Poetry, Painting, & Illuminating Manuscripts.
- The teen workshop is broad-based, with an emphasis on formal poetry writing, and includes watercolor and acrylic painting and illuminating manuscripts with gold leaf (all workshops include writing and visual arts). Pre- registration begins April 25. There is a fee for each session, but scholarships and partial scholarships are available for both Delaware County and out-of-county students. All workshops are from 9 am - 2:30 pm
-
The Adult workshops will focus on book arts and printmaking and will include 1. July 19, 9am - 2 pm - Adult Intensive Book Arts Workshop, Tunnel Books: How to make them and how to incorporate words with the images; includes writing. No prior experience necessary. -
2. August 17-21 - Solar Printmaking for Adults, co-sponsored by the West Kortright Centre, with nationally-known printmaker Dan Welden. The workshop offers an exciting opportunity to learn and apply an innovative new etching process from the master printmaker who conceived and ceveloped it. Welden will demonstrate his alternative etching process that replaces traditional acids and grounds with sunlight and water. This easy and spontaneous approach produces professional, museum-quality prints and encourages students to develop new images and explore the medium. No prior printmaking experience is required. The fee is $500, plus a $50 materials fee, and the class is limited to 10 students.
